Fish of the Day

Date:1/10/2023 3:14 PM

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today we will be focusing on the bigfin squid.

The bigfin squid, also known by the scientific name of Magnapinnidae magnapinna is a deep dwelling cephalopod of which have only been encountered on a few sightings. Called also the "long arm squid", the few sightings of this have caused a media backlash among popular tik toks and youtube videos, leading to a strangely large amount of fear towards an animal you will never see in your life.

Little is known about the bigfin squid due to the lack of specimens, but the long arms they are feared for can be observed being 13 to 26 feet long and are held perpendicular to the body.

Although we've never seen a bigfin squid feed, it is believed they feed by dragging the long tentacles along the seafloor and grabbing edible animals they find. This can only be speculation until we have further understanding of these animals sadly.

Have a wonderful Tuesday! Go watch the linked video if you can find the time!
