Wonderful Friday everyone! Today's fish of the day is the angel shark!
The angel shark, known by the scientific name Squatina squatina are known for their amusing flat body shape. The natural range and habit stretched from Southern Norway, to as far south as Egypt in the winters, they live primarily in temperate climate, although the population is severely reduced due to human involvement, and they have gone entirely extinct in the North sea, and possibly other areas in its Northern range. This identifies them as critically endangered.
Angel sharks are nocturnal ambush predators, blending into the sea floor and preying on what it can find there. The diet primarily consists of flatfish, skates, squid, crabs, and on some occasions sea birds. They can get as large as 8 feet.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday, and a good weekend! Remember, if you ever want me to write an email on a particular species, let me know!
