Fish of the Day

Date:

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today's fish of the day is the photocorynus!

The Photocorynus spiniceps, has no common name I can find. There is little research on this fish, but they are remarkable in that they are considered to be the smallest fish in the world! The photocorynus is a species of anglerfish found in the Philippines. The largest photocorynus has been found at the grand size of 2 inches, however, most sexually mature adults only reach the size of 6 or 7 mm, or 0.25-0.30 inches

Like most other anglerfish, they are known for luring prey with a bioluminescent sac, held at the end of a highly modified dorsal fin. Most prey, which is larger or the same size as these fish, is swallowed whole once lured in front of the mouth. Like most sexually mature angler fish, the species has males fuse their bodies to females like parasites. surviving off of her blood stream, and breeding at will.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Tuesday!
