Fish of the Day

Date:10/20/2023 8:00 AM

Wonderful Friday everyone! Today's fish of the day is the spiny lobster!

The spiny lobster, also known as Rock lobsters, are the family Palinuridae. Distinct from true lobsters, they can be easily distinguished by the long antennae, and the lack of claws on the first four legs. Although females of certain species inside this family may have claws on the fifth leg. Despite this, they are very similar to true lobsters, with a similar shape, arapiece, and exoskeleton. Surprisingly, they are not very closely related.

Spiny lobsters can be traced back as far as 110 million years, by a fossil found in Mexico. They can be as small as 30 cm, and the largest record has been as large as 60 cm. There are claims of lobsters reaching as large as 2 meters, but these are unconfirmed. They can be found in almost all warm seas, their habitat especially large in Mediterranean, Caribbean, Australian shores, and Southern Africa.

I hope everyone has a good Friday!!
