Happy Thursday everybody! Today's fish of the day is the reef stonefish, one that is regularly called "the deadliest fish in the ocean".
The reef stonefish, known by the scientific name Synanceia verrucosa this fish is native to the coasts of Australia, and around the indo-pacific ocean, although it has been recently found that the reef stonefish has been found in and around the mediterranean. As implied by the name, they find their name among reefs, and other various rocks or places they can blend in. This camouflage however is somewhat unneeded considering that they are significantly venomous.
They can be found feeding on small fish and various shrimp. Their feeding method is to linger on the seabed and wait for these animals to swim close so that the reef stonefish can lunge forward and engulf their prey whole. This species only reaches lengths of 11 inches.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thursday! Stay safe out on the ice and snow!
